Matthew 5:44 The Breadth of God's Commands
Matthew 5:44 - Love your enemies

Matthew 5:44:  But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

This Gem displays just one command, "Love your enemies".  But what a range of applications this command has.  Love is an action word.  Love is Charity.  Heavenly Father's command to Love our enemies instructs us to put our enemies ahead of ourselves; put their best interest ahead of our own.  We are to offer them help, food, security, mercy, forgiveness and generosity.

This command addresses not only our actions but also our attitude.  We are to bless them, pray for their wellbeing, sincerely desire their success.

"Love your Enemy" has countless applications.  But this is not the most challenging aspect of this command.  We are commanded to do this in the face of their hatred, their persecution, and their unthankfulness.  We are to offer forgiveness to those who refuse to forgive us.  How hard is that?

Another aspect of this Gem is that it is not sufficient to love an enemy some of the time.  This command cannot be kept by coming out of our comfort zone once in a while and doing a few works of service.  It requires that we love every enemy at all times!  Each time we fail to act in any enemy's best interest we break this commandment.  We cannot roll up a good score by counting how many times we love an enemy.  On the contrary, we demonstrate our inability to keep Heavenly Father's commands every time we fail to love an enemy.
