A Very Significant Day of the Old Testament
The Israelite people of the Old Testament were chosen by God and set apart to accomplish an amazing purpose for all people of
all time. It was during these Old Testament times that God taught his people that being worthy would bring health, protection from enemies, and
prosperity. When people chose to do wrong and not use their agency, their actions brought quick, visible punishment.
God hated sin and provided
a means for his people to be worthy in His sight.
For the Israelite people, the Day of Atonement was one of the means God provided. It became a most sacred work on behalf
of all people. It was this ritual that exposed not only God’s hatred of sin, but also the dire need for all people to be cleansed and be made
worthy in order to come before God’s presence. More importantly, this ritual had an even greater significance by casting a shadow on events to
come that Old Testament people did not fully understand.
